In an effort to capture authentic New England atmosphere, the production became the first scripted TV series in 30 years to be filmed entirely in Massachusetts for its first season. The primary filming took place at the New England Studio in Devens and in the town of Orange, where production ran from August 2017 to January 2018. The crew utilized a nondescript warehouse complex deep in a remote forest to create the interior of Shawshank and other key locations.
The series was a collaboration between Stephen King and J.J. Abrams, who produced the show through his Bad Robot Productions banner. The showrunners, Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, were given unprecedented access to King's library because of their relationship with Abrams and Warner Bros., which owned the rights to many of King's most iconic films.
