Younger generations (Gen Z and Alpha) are coming out as trans and non-binary at rates never seen before. They are also more likely to be queer, neurodivergent, and of mixed race. This new cohort is pushing LGBTQ culture to be anti-racist, disability-inclusive, and economically just. The transgender community’s long history of mutual aid (sharing hormones, housing, and legal advice) is becoming the blueprint for a more resilient queer future.
During the assimilationist pushes of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, mainstream gay rights organizations occasionally sidelined or explicitly excluded transgender individuals. The goal was often to appear more palatable to conservative lawmakers, a strategy that left trans people vulnerable and erased their contributions to the movement.
To fully understand transgender integration into LGBTQ+ culture, one must distinguish between gender identity and sexual orientation. Sexual orientation concerns whom a person is attracted to (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual). It is impossible to discuss the transgender community and LGBTQ culture without centering —a term coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw. The experience of a white gay man in a wealthy suburb is vastly different from that of a Black trans woman in the Bronx.
The relationship between the transgender community and LGBTQ+ culture is dynamic and continuously evolving. True solidarity within the culture requires active allyship from cisgender lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals. This involves centering transgender voices in political platforms, defending trans healthcare, and ensuring that queer spaces are physically and socially safe for all gender expressions. For decades, bar raids and police harassment were a daily reality for queer and trans individuals. The turning point came in the late 1960s. At the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot in San Francisco (1966) and the Stonewall Riots in New York City (1969), transgender women of color, drag queens, and gender-nonconforming youth stood at the front lines.
