Set in the dystopian megacity of "Neo-Tokyo" in the year 2019, the story unfolds 31 years after a mysterious explosion levelled the original Tokyo, sparking World War III. The central characters are two teenage friends and members of a biker gang: the hot-headed and confident leader, Shōtarō Kaneda, and his weaker, insecure friend, Tetsuo Shima. After a near-fatal accident with a psychic child escapee from a secret military lab, Tetsuo begins to awaken incredible, and uncontrollable, telekinetic powers. As the military, led by the scheming Colonel Shikishima, and a revolutionary terrorist group vie for control of this new power, Tetsuo's abilities spiral out of control, culminating in a psychic showdown that threatens to consume all of Neo-Tokyo. At the center of the mystery lies a child named Akira, who holds the key to the apocalyptic power that first destroyed the city.
This forced Vietnamese viewers, many of whom were young adults, to reconsider the potential of animation as a medium for serious, philosophical storytelling.
