The story begins in a deceptively idyllic way. Dr. Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) and his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), are a wealthy and glamorous Manhattan couple invited to a lavish Christmas party hosted by Bill’s patient, the powerful financier Victor Ziegler (Sydney Pollack). At the party, Bill flirts with two models, while Alice is sexually pursued by a charming Hungarian magnate. They later smoke cannabis, and in a late-night confessional that forms the emotional crux of the film, Alice drops a bombshell.
