Penthouse , founded by Bob Guccione in 1965, had already established itself as a major player in the men’s magazine market. It occupied a unique position somewhere between the comparatively tame Playboy and the aggressively explicit Hustler in terms of explicitness and respectability. Guccione, a frustrated artist who once attended a Catholic seminary, started the magazine in England to subsidize his art career and served as its first photographer. By the early 1980s, Penthouse was a well-oiled machine, but nothing—absolutely nothing—prepared the world for what happened in the summer of 1984.
